Choosing a Trial Order Quantity
A trial quantity should be small enough to review but large enough to produce useful observations in the intended display.
Practical Considerations
Start with the space available, the sales period and the supplier's pack requirements. An attractive unit price does not resolve a mismatch between the minimum quantity and the store's ability to display or store the goods.
Suggested Procedure
- Measure display and back-stock capacity.
- Compare the proposed quantity with similar existing items.
- Record the date and conditions for reviewing the trial.
Illustrative Example
If a display holds twelve units and a case contains forty-eight, the buyer is committing to four display fills. Record where the other three fills will be kept and how they will be counted.
Points to Check
A trial has no universal correct size. Note the assumptions behind the quantity so the next decision can use actual store observations.
