Labeling Back Stock

Back-stock labels should allow another staff member to identify the product, variant and quantity without opening several cartons.

Practical Considerations

Use the store's item reference and a plain description together. Keep quantities current when stock is removed for the sales floor, and separate similar variants that could be confused.

Suggested Procedure

  1. Label the item and variant.
  2. Record saleable units remaining.
  3. Identify the shelf or storage position.

Illustrative Example

Two cartons of identical-looking gift bags may contain different dimensions. Labels showing only gift bags leave staff to reopen and measure them.

Points to Check

Avoid covering supplier information needed for product identification. Keep the store's stock label additional to the original required product information.

Working Record

Use the back-stock location sheet to put the relevant information in one place. You can complete it in your browser, save a text copy or print a blank form for use in the store. Entries are not submitted to NoveltyPlex.
